Description
Summary:Land reclamation has become widely used in recent years due to the increasing demand for space. In most instances of land reclamation, ground improvement works are required due to the highly compressible soft soil. The installation of vertical drains with preloading is a commonly used method of ground improvement. The use of vertical drains with preloading shortens consolidation time and accelerates the rate of settlement. Two methods, the Asaoka Method and the Hyperbolic Method were used to estimate the ultimate settlements while Terzaghi’s 1-D Equation was used to calculate the theoretical settlements of Chek Lap Kok International Airport (Hong Kong) and Kansai International Airport (Japan) when vertical drains were employed. Additionally, the VDrainSt method was used for Chek Lap Kok International Airport (Hong Kong). The results obtained through these methods were then compared against field data for ground settlement to discuss the differences and the relevant practical considerations.
