The data was analysed using conventional content analysis. 13 themes emerged elucidating how the elderly perceive art as both form and function, how the elderly experienced substantial holistic wellbeing benefits from arts engagement and the impediments the elderly face that restrict further engagement. The elderly participants believed that the arts play a vital role in building a healthy life, facilitating meaningful social interaction and boosting one’s self-value. Several recommendations are proposed to alleviate the barriers to arts engagement. Limitations regarding the methodology, small sample size and language difficulties during data collection are discussed. This study provides qualitative evidence in support of the benefits of arts and wellbeing for elderly, while also generating new knowledge about the psychological needs of the elderly in Singapore that can be fulfilled through arts engagement.
