Summary:In line with the government’s effort to promote a car-lite Singapore, personal mobility devices (PMDs) are seen to be the solution to the ‘last mile’ problem. To get from one place to another, riders can take the well-connected bus or MRT system in Singapore. However, once at the station or bus stop, some riders might need to walk an additional distance to get to their final destination. Personal mobility devices aim to be the solution of this ‘last mile’ problem. In order to bring greater convenience and promote the take up rate of these last mile solutions, PMDs and more notably Electric Bicycles (e-bikes) are given access to common and shared pathways in park connectors and on roads. With the shared usage of these pathways, more accidents are bound to occur. This can be in terms of collision with pedestrians or cars on the road. Prevention of such accidents are the main objective of the report. The author would study the different kind of accidents that could happen between e-bikes and pedestrians or cars, and analyze what technology could be implemented to prevent such accidents from occurring. A hardware or software would then be designed and developed to complement the use case. Lastly, testing would be done to ensure that the product works as intended.
