Description
Summary:The notion of self-driving cars taking over our roads has been garnering plenty of interest from the public. The exponential improvements in technology over the past decades have aided the growth of autonomous vehicles. What was once a dream to people in the past, is becoming a reality for this generation. Whilst many marvel at the technological feat and achievement of this innovation, there are many considerations and concerns surrounding the innovation. This is due to the massive impact autonomous vehicles have on society. Some of these impacts are: an improvement in air quality; reduction in fuel consumption; improved safety; disruption to other industries; lifestyle changes; cultural transformations; and cityscape alterations. The technology also raises a lot of doubts and concerns. Despite numerous experiments and testing that show the improved performance over human drivers, many remain doubtful over the safety of such vehicles. Endless debates on the ethical dilemmas and liability concerns continue to hinder the growth of the technology. This report will discuss and elaborate on the abovementioned points. Last but not least, considerations to the implementation of autonomous transportation in Singapore will be made. The report will focus on the possibility of autonomous vehicles in the field of public transportation. Whilst autonomous vehicles can provide on-demand services similar to a taxi, this report will focus on fixed-route services. The effects of such an implementation will be presented and evaluated.
