In order to meet ever increasing demands for new homes by 2030, Singapore will have to raise its construction productivity level. In Singapore, many tower cranes are still extensively utilised today that do not equip the advanced automatic and sensor based system. Problems in existing manual methods of logistic management and inventory checking prior to hoisting a prefabricated component resulted in delay and extension of construction duration. The problems encountered in the current tower crane system result in low productivity and unsafe operation. In order to enhance the tower crane’s productivity and their safety, a game changing semi-automated tower crane system is developed. The proposed system will eliminate deficiencies by using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology integrated Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) technology and building information modelling technology (BIM). A field test was executed at a real life construction site to identify benefits and economic feasibility of the proposed system. The proposed system successfully reduced hoisting time which results in productivity raise. Also, it succeeded in automatically identifying precast component at storage yard. The implementation of proposed tower crane system resulted in the great economic benefits.
