Storage energy technologies to be considered in this study include lead acid battery (LAB), lithium ion battery (LIB) and vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). The performance of the integration system will be evaluated with respect to various input cost and the resulting system costs over the lifetime of various storage technologies using HOMER software, by simulating the solar energy input, diesel generator run time, electrical load on the micro-grid and the various energy storage system performance. The results were then compared with the use of only a diesel generator to supply electricity to Pulau Ubin residents as a benchmark. A system comprising only diesel generators and solar PV was also looked at to compare if energy storage at Pulau Ubin is an economic option. The simulations show that using solar PV results in cost savings as compared to a system with only diesel generators and VRB performs comparably to lead acid batteries and much better than lithium ion batteries. Further, due to the low installed capacity of solar PV at Pulau Ubin, a system with solar PV but no energy storage was found to be cheaper.
