Description
Summary:NDT of welds is mostly carried out by experienced human operators worldwide. These operators will often report differing results from each other. This is because defects will have complicated shapes and varying sizes and also particularly because defect signals are often confused with unwanted spurious signals. This project will analyse defect signals to determine the sizes and locations of the defects. The NDT techniques to be used will be penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonics "B" and "C" scan. All "A" data is automately saved during these procedures and these can be analysed after the tests are completed. The weld specimens for this project all exist in NTU. Other specimens can be made by drilling holes into a material to simulate defects such as cracks. Crack shapes and sizes can be easily varied enabling the accuracy of sizing techniques like maximum amplitude and 20db drop to be investigated.
