For this project, the main purpose is to design a low profile antennas for V2X Communications which is one of the core parts of the and intelligent transportation system, e.g. vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to traffic light, with a better performance and larger gain than the previous design which is circular patch-ring antenna. By comparing different antenna designs, the aim is to find the most suitable one to support the V2X communications. Firstly, in this report, antenna fundamentals as well as basic antenna designs will be introduced to show how to determine whether an antenna is a good design or a bad design. Secondly, circular patch - ring antenna is discussed to show what its disadvantage is and where the place is we can improve. Thirdly, circular patch - slot antenna is introduced to improve the previous design. The technology behind this design will also be discussed. Last but not least, the use of metamaterials structure is explored. The circular patch - slot antenna with metamaterials structure will be compared with all other designs.
