Results attained from this test would be compared with previous FYP students and other external research reports. The purpose of this report is to obtain data from different procedures and add to the data base of results for future student references. Increasing the data base of results will allow future students to see a more extensive specimen data to conclude the trend and mechanical properties displayed by the test specimens. Static tensile testing is a common procedure used to determine mechanical properties of materials. In this FYP the Shimadzu tensile machine would be used to gain data for the ultimate tensile strength. A strain gauge would be attached to the test specimen to get strain readings. The objective is to fabricate the test specimen according to the ASTM standard. The student is also to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the Shimadzu machine. This would be done by using Aluminium 6061-T6 would be used. Following the check of reliability both Magnesium and Aluminium would be put under varying feed rate of 1.6mm/min, 1.0mm/min and 0.5mm/min to observe if there is any effect of varying strain rates on the mechanical properties of the metal alloys. To carry out this experiment ASTM E8/E8M-15a international standard will be used as guide. Data collected would be used to plot stress-strain curves which will be used to compare the difference in results. The project will continuously adapt and make changes during the experiments to attain far accurate and reliable result. Recommendations for future students will be made to improve on the current FYP. At the final stage of the FYP, a simple guide for this project would be prepared by the author to help assist and expedite the process for future student who would be pursuing the same project. The guide would cover details such as information on obtaining Raw materials, use of different software, selection of strain gauges, personal recommendations and etc. Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) 2017-05-24T02:35:39Z 2017-05-24T02:35:39Z 2017 Final Year Project (FYP) http://hdl.handle.net/10356/72054 en Nanyang Technological University 64 p. application/pdf
