Description
Summary:This report provides an overview of a platform strategy that offers flexibility in modifying the structure as well as the properties of core-shell plasmonic nanoparticles with built-in nanogaps. The different layers of the core-shell nanoparticles are separated by mussels-inspired polydopamine (PDA). PDA serves multiple functions as a nanoscale spacer to offer controllable nanogap sizes, a redox-active coating to promote metal shell growth as well as a reactive scaffold to lock molecular probes inside the nanogap for surface-enhanced Raman scattering. This universal adhesion of PDA on diverse colloidal structures also allow for customisable synthesis of multishell plasmonic nanogapped nanoparticles and multifunctional hybrid nanogapped nanoparticles that contain different cores.
