Description
Summary:This study focuses on the effect on weather parameters have on passive technologies such as cool roof, double skin roof, green roof and insulated roof. A simulation study was conducted by first comparing the effect of climate zones based on American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers ((coo) standard against the passive technologies. The results showed that double skin roof consistently showed significant energy savings and was the best among all the passive technologies when simulating in climate zones 1-5. Green roof and insulated roof also showed energy savings throughout the 5 climate zones. Whereas, cool roof only displayed energy savings in zone 1 and 2. Cool incurred heating losses in zone 3 to 5, total energy consumption was more than the simulated “original” roof. Weather parameters that were studied were outside air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and solar irradiation. Significant trends can be seen for outside air temperature, for the cool roof and double skin roof. Cool roof performance increases as temperature increases, double skin roof decreases as temperature increases. Higher humidity equates to slightly lower performance. Wind speed has a negligible effect on the performance. Each passive technology was affected differently by solar irradiation.
