A preliminary design of a test rig was also developed to analyze topic involving fluid mechanics in the maritime and offshore engineering. Literature review of classic offshore engineering was done to explain how fluid motions affect different kinds of structures offshore. Due to the growing importance of renewable energy, wind energy or particular interest. Literature review was provided on how offshore wind energy could be harnessed to produce energy. The effects of wave and wind motion on offshore wind turbines were discussed. The different types of structures used were elaborated in two categories, fixed platform and floating platform. As many researches had been done quite extensively on fixed platform, floating platform wind turbines are more relevant to the project relating current research topic. Different forms of floating platform wind turbines were analyzed to find out how the wave motions interact with their structures and the wind turbine’s efficiency that the structure is supporting. A test rig of a semi-submersible floating wind turbine was also done to explore how the wave motions affect the efficiency of the wind turbine. Important factors, which determine the wind turbine’s output, were determined and analyzed from the prototype test rigs.
