Summary: | The main purpose of this project is to fabricate and characterize an electrically conductive ceramic material for the use of waste water filtration. Ceramic filters are ideal water filters due to the various advantages it has in the process of waste water filtration. However, membrane fouling is a problem in the waste water filtration process because it affects the process in many ways. One of the possible solutions is to pass an electric field through the filter membrane which may reduce membrane fouling as evident from various past experiments. However, ceramic filters are not electrical conductors. Therefore, by introducing metal additives into ceramics, the ceramic membrane filter may be able to conduct electricity, which is the aim of this project. Ceramic and metal mixtures of different weight percentages are tested out to find out the best combination. This project also intends to characterize other properties of the mixture such as its mechanical strength, porosity and thermal properties. |
