Description
Summary:This report investigates the rock mechanics of granite during an excavation in the Singapore Bukit Timah granite formation. The report is based on two different types of tests that would be run to test the rock mechanics of granite. The tests comprise of conventional compression triaxial test and unloading confining pressure triaxial test. The conventional compression triaxial test is to simulate the granite specimen at an undisturbed state in the ground. The unloading confining pressure triaxial is to simulate the process of excavation where the confining pressure that compresses the granite is reduced. Therefore, with the aid of the MTS compression machine, the experimental conditions can be setup. The results obtained from the experiments would be compared to find out the mechanical behavior of granite under different confine pressure and unloading confining pressure condition. The energy release rate and count from acoustic emission would measure as well to determine which type of confine pressure conditions would lead to have a devastating specimen failure.
