A suitable variable speed wind turbine increase the power efficiency significantly compared with fixed speed wind turbine. Most of the modern wind turbines are variable speed wind turbine because of the power efficiency concern. There are two popular AC wind turbine generators used in the market: permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The permanent magnet synchronous generator has the potential to dominate the market. Fixed speed wind turbine AC generator output connects to the gird via inverter/converters, which helps to stabilize the voltage level and frequency. There are various of inverter/converter (eg, AC-DC inverter, DC-DC step up/down converter, etc. ) designs in the market, but the basic working principles are the same. These power electronics elements play an import role in controlling the voltage level and frequency. This report is a study of wind power generation and conversion. It covers from wind power generation, conversion (AC-DC inverter, DC-DC booster and DC-AC inverter) and delivery to the power grid. Due to the complexity of the wind turbine circuit, simulation software used in the circuit design. There are many suitable software in the market available .eg PSIM and mat lab. They are user friendly and easy to learn. In this report, PSIM software was chosen to do the circuit design and simulation work. This report has 2 main parts: First part discussed the AC generator, including types of wind generators, the working principle of generators used in the wind turbine. PSIM circuit design of wind turbine generator. Second part talked about the power conversion, which including all the inverter/converters working principle, design and simulation results.
