Summary:A new arrival sequencing method has been established, henceforth known as the Optimal Time Separation (OTS) method. The OTS method is a technique that separates aircrafts optimally, by means of speed variation before they reach the airport’s airspace. The first objective of this project was to develop a distance-based algorithmic model that can represent the OTS method. This algorithmic model was then created, programmed into Microsoft Excel and compared with previous studies from AirTOp. The second objective, was to use this developed algorithm, to study how different variables affect the OTS method. Three variables were selected: Planning Horizon Distance, Range of Speed Adjustments and Planning Horizon Distance proportional to the volume of aircrafts in each Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR). The effect of the variables on the Total Holding Duration was recorded. It was initially hypothesized that varying the Planning Horizon Distance to match the proportion of air traffic approaching each STAR would reduce the Total Holding Duration. However, this was not observed. With the results obtained, recommendations to modify the OTS method was suggested.
