Walking and cycling has become a focus as a viable mode of transport under the government’s Walk-Cycle-Ride vision. Infrastructural improvements have been made to promote walking and cycling as a viable mode of transport. The Land Transport Authority has made improvement efforts by providing both on and off-road cycling infrastructure. This includes the construction of on-road cycle lanes and expanding off-road paths. More recently, the Active Mobility Bill was passed to allow cyclists to cycle on most types of public paths. This study focuses on the recent improvements in walking and cycling infrastructure in Singapore. In the first part of the study, on- and off-road cycling schemes, namely on-road cycling without cycle lane, on-road cycling with cycle lane and off-road delineated paths were analysed and compared. This is followed by an in-depth study on off-road public paths, where users’ perceptions on four types of paths (pathway, widened path, delineated path and segregated path) were collected. Results from this study show that recent infrastructural improvements have increased the number of walking and cycling trips. Safety has also been identified as a key factor influencing travel mode decisions.
