Shift in Singapore-China relationship : China’s changing stance on Singapore-Taiwan ties

This thesis reflects on how a shift in bilateral leadership of Singapore-China relationship resulted in China's tougher stance on Singapore-Taiwan partnership from the late 1960s to present. It argues that contrary to prevalent views, which emphasize on bilateral relationship between Singapore and China and foreign policy of Singapore, this thesis examines tri-states (Singapore, China and Taiwan) interactions and effects of changing relationship between Singapore and China, particularly how such change in relation could affect China's view on Singapore-Taiwan ties. Thus, this thesis attempts to analyze the abovementioned shortfall.
This analysis begins by looking at the background of steady and dramatic rise of China over past two decades and maps out the shift of bilateral leadership from Singapore to China. The analysis then argues that as China gradually takes over the leadership of bilateral ties from Singapore, China undoubtedly presents a stronger and critical stance on Singapore-Taiwan relationship. |
