Summary: | This thesis will argue for a synthesis of faith and science which are often regarded as contradictory. It will be premised on the compatibility of evolutionary theory, an old earth and the doctrine of creation as detailed in the Book of Genesis in Christian theology. It contends that the Biblical account is consistent with what can be known and observed via the scientific method, through a careful exegesis of the text in Genesis, with reference to other parts of the Bible. Close and particular attention will be paid to evolutionary theory and its implications for Christian doctrine: primarily, whether Adam and Eve were real, historical figures and what the conclusion that they were not entails. I will also briefly elaborate on the necessity of religion despite the sufficiency of evolutionary theory for explaining how modern human beings developed. |
