Interracial dating in Singapore : race and religion

Despite the close proximity of racial and religious groups, this research finds that interracial dating couples in Singapore continue to encounter and have to address stereotypes, prejudice and racism. This research focuses on three main processes in the daily lives of interracial dating couples - mate selection, religion conversion, and tensions and coping strategies. Existing literature on interracial dating largely focuses on race or religion separately. This research attempts to study both parameters together through a comparative study of two different groups of interracial dating couples: Muslim - Non-Muslim couples and Non-Muslim - Non-Muslim couples. Findings show the intersectionality of race and religion in interracial dating relationships. This research therefore aims to deepen the current understanding of this phenomenon and hopes to reduce the negative attached to it.
