Direct stylization of 3D animations in real time

This project explores research in the field of non-photorealistic rendering (NPR). A charcoal rendering system was developed to simulate traditional charcoal drawing style in 3D space. Traditional charcoal drawings were analyzed and a breakdown on their features was made. Procedures on extracting 3D...

A charcoal rendering system was developed to simulate traditional charcoal drawing style in 3D space. Traditional charcoal drawings were analyzed and a breakdown on their features was made. Procedures on extracting 3D profile of scanned paper were standardized. These 3D profiles were then used as textures during rendering. Subsequently, stylization techniques were developed to simulate the charcoal drawings, based on the specific features determined previously. These techniques were implemented using High-Level Shader Language (HLSL) shaders and were incorporated into a direct stylization framework developed within Autodesk Maya to be used on 3D modelling and animations. Using the tools provided by the framework, artists can intuitively art-direct and stylize the models to their aesthetic desires.
