Summary: | The title of this Final Year Project (FYP) is Static Compression Test of Materials, B205. The aim of this report is to allow specific specimens to undergo compression test under controlled settings. The controlled settings would follow strictly to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Standards. In this case of study, Aluminium Alloy 6061-T6 (Al606-T6) would be utilized together with the Shimadzu AG-X plus 100KN compression testing machine. The ASTM standard to follow is the Standard Test Methods of Compression Testing of Metallic Materials at Room Temperature (E9-09). In the ASTM standards, it includes details such as the test specimen size to use, the degree of accuracy of the machine needed for testing and the testing procedures to follow. All these details are to be adhered to as closely as possible to obtain optimal results and accuracy. Through this study, the objective is to identify the behaviour of Al606-T6 while following the standards when exposed to very specific compressive stress. As such, compressive properties such as compressive strength, yield strength and elastic modulus can be determined through the testing experiment. The compression test would be initiated by placing the Al606-T6 specimen between two fixed compression plates of the Shimadzu testing machine. The applied force would then slowly compress the specimen where results would be recorded by the machine for further analysis. This report is made up of 5 main sections where the first part is the introduction which would cover the background information, rationale and scope of this FYP. The second part would then be the literature review which explains the rationale behind choosing the specimen dimensions, terminologies and material description. The third section would include the experimental setup procedure. The fourth section would cover the results and discussion of the static compression test followed. Lastly, the fifth section is to conclude the experiment and suggest any possible future recommendations to allow the test to achieve a higher standard of accuracy and precision. |
