Summary: | The advancement of technology has brought about many trends in all facets of the world, and has since changed the way we live our life. Particularly in consumer electronics, wearable technology and smart homes are the most common trends. In recent years, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices has become the most prevalent wearable technology as it allows for many capabilities with a small footprint due to its extremely low power consumption. Smart homes on the other hand allow for household amenities to be controlled with some form of automation or remote, thereby simplifying people’s day-to-day life. With the ever-growing elderly population in Singapore, there is an increase in emphasis placed on healthcare for the aging society. A major concern is that elderly’s wellbeing will be neglected when they are left alone at home as their usually have limited mobility. In view of the increase in availability technology, a solution seems possible by allowing a caregiver to keep watch over an elderly without physically being there. Elderly Monitoring Systems (EMS) provides remote monitoring of the elderly at home and are readily available in the market. However, none of them provides a system with all-rounder features to cater for the needs of the end users. This project aims to develop an EMS to provide effective monitoring and reporting for the family members and caregivers of the elderly. The project will focus on integrating multiple computational devices (Raspberry Pi) and a wearable technology equipped with an extensive list of sensors (Texas Instruments SimpleLink BLE SensorTag). With the need to provide a holistic system in mind, video surveillance and medical reminder will also be incorporated into the system to provide for the needs of the users. |
