Description
Summary:To ensure the safety of all road users are met on Singapore roads, the relevant authority employs numerous tools to meet this goal. One of the most important tool is the usage and deployment of speed reduction measures. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of non-physical speed reduction measures used in Singapore. The paper will also evaluate the desirability of the differential speed limit (DSL) system as used in Singapore Expressway. The research shows that most non-physical speed reduction measures are being deployed fairly to have an effective speed reduction influence on vehicles. Speed cameras are one of the most efficient speed reduction measures. Speed signs are effective, but their deployment need to be strategic, usually deployed with other measures or at locations where drivers only need the reminder. A specific kind of speed sign, Your Speed Sign, can be effective with the correct usage as well. School zones are found to have limited effectiveness on reducing vehicle speed, however, this might be due to other factors. Regarding DSL system on Singapore expressway, it is appropriate for Singapore (more so as compared to other countries such as US) to adopt this system. This is due to our multi-lane expressway can alleviate some of the drawbacks of DSL faced by 2-lane expressways overseas. Furthermore, with army vehicles using the expressway, it is a necessity for there to be DSL in Singapore.
