Description
Summary:Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) becomes more crucial nowadays. In this research, plastic fiber sensor’s feasibility was tested whether it is suitable for SHM. The plastic fiber cable that is used for the sensor is quite cheap. Hence, it will reduce the maintenance cost. The first part of this research was calibrating the plastic fiber sensor. Three types of gap, which are horizontal gap, vertical gap, and rotational gap were calibrated. Then, the relationship between the light intensity and the gap was plotted for each type of gap. The main experiment in this research was dynamic test loading. The plastic fiber sensor was used to determine the frequency of cantilever and simply supported beam in various condition of bolts. This experiment’s purpose was to test the capability of the plastic fiber sensor to detect the change in the frequency if the bolts were loosened in the joint. The results of the experiment were compared to the accelerometer test and ANSYS simulation to check the credibility of it. Based on the comparison, the plastic fiber sensor shows a lot of potential in SHM for detecting the change in the frequency if the bolts were loosened.
