Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods have been quite prevalent in the aerospace industry and one of the NDT methods - Ultrasonic Scanning has proven to be one of the most reliable techniques, while ensuring swift operations and hence low turn-round time. With proper usage, execution and safety precautions taken, this technique will potentially help MRO companies and airlines save millions of dollars by decreasing the turn-round-time of aircrafts. This report presents results obtained from conducting of Non-Destructive Testing experiments using ‘A scan (60 degree probe)’ compared to the conventional ‘A Scan (Thickness Measurement System)’ method. The crack size (Depth and Width) as well as the exact crack location were detected using the A Scan method. Also, why I choose the A Scan method over the B Scan and C Scan method is discussed. In this report, 304 Stainless Steel plates will be tested with, using the above mentioned ultrasonic methods. Efficiency is of utmost importance in the MRO industry and this study on the A Scan method will examine its pros and cons, as well as the feasibility of using and implementing this modern day NDT technology.
