Summary:Images captured using ground-based Whole Sky Imagers (WSIs) are utilized in order to supplement information and data derived from satellite imagery with regards to weather patterns found over a localized area of interest. However, these imaging devices can be expensive to deploy, and the design and features provided may not be entirely suitable for the environment they will be used in. Previous projects at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have sought to develop a simple whole sky imager capable of capturing high resolution images, with a low manufacturing cost. One of these is the Wide Angle High-Resolution Sky Imaging System (WAHRSIS) 5, which featured a mobile device installed with an application that allowed it to capture images at specific intervals. Unfortunately, errors undocumented by the developer prevented the deployment of this device. As such, we investigated and fixed what issues that could be found, while modifying and improving the application to introduce additional features. In addition, the manufacture of a protective casing for the mobile device via 3d printing was also attempted. This paper documents the way the application operates, as well as the design and manufacture of the protective casing.
