Summary: | The Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is a fully digital electromagnetic transient power system simulator that operates in real time. It provides power systems simulation technology for fast, reliable, accurate and cost-effective study of power systems with complex High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks. One main advantage of RTDS is that the power system algorithms are calculated quickly enough to continuously produce output conditions that realistically represent conditions in a real network. Hence, the user can test physical devices and the user is more productive by completing many studies quickly with the real-time simulation. Besides real-time simulation, RTDS also supports hardware in the loop (HIL) and power HIL (PHIL) testing.
An OPAL-RT RTDS and TriPhase power converter stack (PCS) has been previously purchased and is currently located in Clean Energy Research Lab (CERL) at S2-b7-05. As part of the project, the student is expected to achieve two main tasks. Firstly, to understand and familiarise the operation of OPAL-RT RTDS and TriPhase PCS paying special attention to its operation for PHIL applications. Secondly, to establish a communication link between OPAL-RT and TriPhase PCS to enable PHIL testing. |
