Description
Summary:Atelier of Porcelain Ghosts is an illustrative experimentation that seeks to reimagine Japanese yōkai using stylistic elements from Chinese blue and white porcelain, or qing hua ci. Drawing from supernatural tales in Japanese folklore, kaidan and Chinese zhiguai and chuanqi, the work offers an unorthodox representation of the ghost as a curious class of quaint oddities and sympathetic characters that serve to entertain, to impart, and to rouse our curiosities towards the Other. The underlying significance of the project lies in investigating the development and application of Chinese decorative arts for illustration and design as well as exploiting the creative potential of the ghost database for a contemporary audience.
