Summary:Even though safety on board ships have been enhanced, there are still a lot of casualties in the Maritime domain. About 85% of marine accident was caused by human error. Therefore, the Maritime domain has looked into the need to research and study on human factors affecting Maritime. A partnership between Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA), Nanyang Technological University and Fraunhofer IDM aims to investigate human factors by using EEG brain state monitoring technology. Experiment are conducted at SMA bridge simulator, which creates similar sailing environment on the sea, to validate the reliability of EEG technology. A total of 18 subjects participated in exercises with 4 different scenarios and as the difficulty level in the task gets higher, the EEG data is recorded using Emotiv Epoch wireless headsets. After it is recorded, the EEG data would be processed using machine learning algorithms to detect emotion and workload. The EEG data will then be processed through a new algorithm as the new algorithm is able to filter out and identify if the cadets are ready for real sea situation.
