As the capacity of an electrical network is limited, a huge demand from the consumer side is likely to cause undesirable outcomes during peak period. The focus of this report will be on residential consumers. In Singapore context, with new residence launches each year, the electrical demand is bound to increase. Although utility companies could not control the construction of new homes, there is still a possibility to reduce energy consumption during peak period by the means of DSM. By implementing DSM in an electrical network, utility companies can engage consumers via different Demand Response (DR) techniques and activities which benefit both parties. For instance, during peak period, incentives can be provided to consumers who shift away from it. At the same time, it increases the reliability of the electrical network and prolongs the need of additional equipment for utility companies. A tool to engage consumers is the Home Energy Management System (HEMS). HEMS allow home users to better understand their energy usage pattern by performing analysis of their electrical devices.
