Squeezing of spin ensemble

Quantum mechanics has baffled generations of physicists due to its counterintuitive and bizarre predictions. Its manifestations include the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, quantisation of the electromagnetic (EM) field and its interaction with matter in quantum optics, bosonic and spin squeezing;...

Its manifestations include the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, quantisation of the electromagnetic (EM) field and its interaction with matter in quantum optics, bosonic and spin squeezing; all of which have no classical analogues. To probe the subtleties behind the coupled atom-field dynamics, the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) describing the matter-radiation interaction between a 2-level atom with a single cavity mode quantised EM field in a fixed number state, coherent state and squeezed coherent state is first studied separately. The JCM is next generalised for an N-atom system known as the Tavis-Cummings model (TCM) where the physics is now dominated by the collective behaviour of the atomic ensemble instead of the evolution of specific states. Lastly, the work undertaken by Bennett et al. to achieve spin squeezing via phonon-induced spin-spin interactions in diamond nanostructures coupled to a single mechanical mode of a nanoresonator is discussed to ascertain the possibility of squeezing within a spin ensemble with the experimental model described.
