Summary:It is essential for Singapore port is stay competitive and attractive with Shipping business playing an important role in Singapore economy. Continuous upgrade and improvement are required by the port so that shipping companies are appealed to include Singapore port as one of their stops. With automation and digitalisation gradually occupying most of the aspects in maritime industry, Singapore port needs to invest and adopt technologies to stay relevant and maintain its maritime hub position. This paper examines the possible strategies to increase Singapore economy through attracting more ships from a port view point. The research starts by identifying the current performance gap at the port and conducting preliminary interviews to ask professionals working in the maritime industry for their opinions. Afterwards, literature review is done by studying the current situation of Singapore port and some of the equipment and system that are being used by the port to stay attractive and competitive. It is then followed by further research on one of the potential solutions, Big Data and application of Big Data technology in the maritime industry. Case studies were conducted on two different ports which Big Data sharing platform is being implemented. For both case studies, the data platform features were also studied and evaluated in details. Further interviews were done along the research to gain insights of feasibility of possible strategies to attract more ships to Singapore port. Lastly, recommendation on how the data sharing platform can be improved was given based on the studies. All in all, this report shows how port of Singapore can increase its attractiveness by strengthening its competitive advantage, which is endorsement of Big Data technology in port and promote Big Data sharing platform for this report’s focus, to become a “smart” port. This thus attracts more ships to visit port of Singapore and allow Singapore to generate economic benefits from these ships.
