Description
Summary:The higher efficacy and longer lifetime has resulted in increased usage of LED lighting in the recent years. Using Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices instead of standard MOSFETs enables us to achieve higher frequency operation for the switched mode power supply design. We can also achieve significantly better loss performance by using GaN devices for higher frequency operation. We can reduce the magnetic size by operating the converter at higher frequencies, which will eventually allow us to achieve small form factors for applications with stricter space requirements. But to achieve higher frequency operation, we require soft switching techniques to achieve acceptable performance. This thesis details the design of a high-efficiency credit card size, 380Vdc input, 50W/200W output digitally controlled half-bridge resonant LLC converter with synchronous rectification on the secondary side. The converter is designed to work for constant current output for LED lighting for commercial applications using GaN devices. The LED driver will also feature DALI communication protocol for remote monitoring and control.
