In the face of such a situation, the Thai government in the 19th century did not restrict the Thai Chinese’s power, on the contrary, they encouraged Chinese to naturalize as Thai citizens, and at the same time grant them with greater rights. The situation changed in the 20th century: Thousand years of absolute monarchy in China was overturned, new China was established, international situation was turbulent, and even the political situation in Thailand had also changed. Since then, the plight of Thai Chinese got from bad to worse. The Thai Chinese then had 2 choices: Move back to China, or Naturalize as Thai Citizens, and accept the Thai Culture, language and practices. In this essay, the author will discuss the integration policies that were implemented on the Thai-Chinese by the Thai government, from the 19th to the 20th century. In addition, the author will explain how the policies affected the Thai Chinese.
