Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Social sciences::Political science This paper addresses cancellations and delays to Chinese infrastructure investments in Myanmar, and seeks to answer the question: what are the financial losses to Myanmar from its failure to resolve ethnic conflicts within its own borders? As China is the biggest source of infrastructure investments in Myanmar, the context of the China-Myanmar relationship is examined in depth, followed by a background of Myanmar's internal ethnic conflicts. Case studies of two major Chinese projects are examined- the Myitsone dam and the Kyaukphyu-Kunming pipeline- with additional hydroelectric projects being included in the findings, as well as a sample from the mining industry. By attaching a price tag to delays and cancelations from these projects, this paper offers an additional, financial incentive for Myanmar's leaders to more adamantly seek a political settlement with Myanmar's ethnic groups.
