The study of bed load transport in the open channel flows with vegetation

This project studies the effect that emergent rigid vegetation has on bed flow transportation in open channel flows. Cylindrical fiberglass rods are placed in a flume tank in order to simulate vegetation as well as an open channel respectively. To determine the magnitude of influence from vegetation...

Cylindrical fiberglass rods are placed in a flume tank in order to simulate vegetation as well as an open channel respectively. To determine the magnitude of influence from vegetation, different densities of vegetation were tested by varying the spacing between each fiberglass rod. Different flow rates were also tested to find out the relationship between flow rate and sediment transport as well as incipient motion. The variables measured were the velocity profiles in the flow as well as the mass transport rate of the sediments. The critical flow velocity for incipient sediment motion was determined by using the data of flow discharge and sediment transport rate. At the end, the goal of the experiment was to find out the effect of vegetation density on the bed-load transport of an open channel.
