Description
Summary:Anexperimental study was designed and conducted to observe, record and analyze the dynamicsof the flow interaction whenavortex-ring collideswith the free surface.Axisymmetric vortex ringvortex-rings of Reynolds number, Re = 1000, 2000, 4000 were generated by the piston-cylinder mechanism through a 20 mm circular orifice. The surface of concern is the free surface of water located at an average distance of six diameters away. The experimental study involves the use of techniques like Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) to visualize the flow behavior, and Time Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry(TR-PIV) to obtain measurements for the plotting of vorticity map for different Reynolds number.Observations were made for the whole process of the vortex-ring colliding with the free surface and were discussed in detail in the later sections ofthe report. Comparison with other experimental studies of both free and solid surface were also made to showcase the similarity between the different surface and also ensuring that the author’s results are sound.
