The application of subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing to Singapore dramas

Through SDH, viewers are provided with a combination of both audible and linguistic information. Primarily developed in Western societies, little to none of the East Asian countries have endeavored to establish a unified system, managing the translation and subtitling strategies of audiovisual texts targeted at Deaf and HoH community. Within the context of Singapore, basic multilingual subtitling in Chinese dramas is available for people of all races and the Deaf and HoH community. However, basic subtitling only provides linguistic contents including dialogues, monologues and signs. Such provisions are inadequate in providing equal viewing experiences to the Deaf and HoH community. This paper aims to study how the use of SDH can be incorporated into local Chinese dramas, in order to better cater to the needs of Deaf and HoH viewers. First, a research was conducted on existing SDH practices in the West, examining guidelines mainly from BBC and ITC. Next, by using three local Chinese dramas of different genres, the author identified examples illustrating gaps between information presented in current subtitling practices and information the viewer should originally receive. The three dramas are namely, The Journey: Tumultuous Times, Crescendo and You Can Be An Angel Too. In addition, suggestions were made to exemplify the feasibility of incorporating SDH into local dramas. Finally, the author raised several areas for modification to guidelines currently used in Western countries, with adaptations tailored to a Singaporean context.
