A study on Singapore’s LGBT non-fiction literature : representation and challenges of the sexually diversified

While the local current society is much more open and receptive than the early 1990s, the homosexual community is still unable to gain the acceptance from many citizens and the government. Day-to-day, homosexuals either choose to hide the differences between themselves and the heterosexual hegemony or stay true to oneself and disclose their sexual orientation that diverts from the mainstream society. Yet, LGBT individuals that choose to openly express one’s sexuality and come out of the closet (i.e. self-disclosure of one’s homosexuality) are often subjected to social discrimination, rejection and disapproval. Hence, this thesis seeks to examine the representation of sexual diversity and LGBT individuals through the study of local LGBT non-fiction literature. The paper’s examination on various challenges such as social exclusions that the LGBT community faces further sheds light on the “space of heterosexual consciousness” and its oppression to homosexual individuals. It critiques and challenges heteronormativity through the representation of LGBT stories and the use of “imaginary community” concept.
