本文首先会对文本进行历史化和语境化的阐述,然后分析文本如何通过视觉文本对香港与新加坡面临的问题进行发问和反思。《麦兜,菠萝油王子》将借用谭以诺的麦兜空间学概念,结合影片中的视觉性后现代元素探讨文本对香港精神和资本主义的反思。图像小说《陈福财的艺术生涯》则通过其多层叙事结构和图像对官方叙事进行挑战与反思。
In Fithteen century, Johannes Gutenberg invented the first moveable metal type, a new technology that would change communication. The printing press instituted the shift from an oral culture to a print culture. The invention of the printing not only just make it more accessible for people to communicate via writing but also sparked an entire social and cultural change in the way people live and communicate. With the advent of the industrial revolution in twentieth century, culture experienced a “Pictorial Turn” and transformed into a visually dominant culture. Visual culture emphasizes visual experience. The texts extend reading beyond the words on page.
This paper explores how visual texts can serve as fertile sites for critically reading contemporary culture and understanding social change. Two visual texts are selected, an animated film McDull Prince de la Bun from Hong Kong and graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye from Singapore. Both texts challenge the orthodoxy of official discourse via their visual imagery. McDull Prince de la Bun is a symbol of Hong Kong Culture, it serves as a repository of the changing landscapes of Hong Kong and also an introspection on Hong Kong’s capitalism. On the other hand, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye works on new aspects of Singapore history and challenges the orthodoxy by actively imaging alternative histories, and use them to question the past and present of Singapore. |
