Description
Despite being the last country in Southeast Asia to establish diplomatic relations with China, Singapore played an integral role in their modern development. Majority of the research papers discussing on Singapore’s contribution to China investigated mainly on the economic investment and educational aspects. However, in the fields of urban planning and development which bears the origins to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries was left unexplored by the academic circles. This thesis will focus on Dr. Liu Thai Ker ‘s urban planning experience and aims to fill an important academic gap - attempting to understand and explore the contributions of Singaporean Chinese in the context of rising urban disease in China. Since China’s reform and opening up, the rapid urbanization of China has brought about a huge economic effect, however at the same time it also triggered many cases of urban diseases caused by excessive population concentration. In this context, the academic circle starts to question the high population density development path in China. However, the development of a livable city with a small land area and a high population density in Singapore has successfully subverted the popular notion that livable conditions can only be satisfied if population density remains low. At the same time, it also provided a solution to China’s urban disease problem. Through the research on Dr. Liu Thai Ker in Xixian New Area and Zhuhai Project, this paper concludes that Singapore's urban planning model not only successfully mitigated the urban disease problem in Xixian New Area, it also successfully dissolves the regional urban disease problem experienced in the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, which proves the contribution of Dr. Liu in China.
