| Summary: | Most academic works on Singaporean nationalism focus on events in the post- independence era. This dissertation aims to explore how Singaporean nationalism had been conceived and developed before Singapore’s independence. The primary argument of this thesis is that Singaporean nationalism had been paradoxically conceived within Malayan nationalism. This dissertation also argues that Singapore unique geographical position puts it a dialectic position where it between a materialist-maritime oriented nationalism and an idealistic-hinterland oriented nationalism. |
