Applicability of democratic peace theory in East Asia context

The aim of the study is to compare and discuss the applicability of democratic peace theory in East Asia context by assessing in what ways differences in political regimes impact progress in disputes in the region. Central to this analysis is the democratic peace theory, founded by Kant which postulates that democracies are less likely to wage war on each other. This paper will also examine alternative explanations such as strategies of engagement and Asian values that could contribute to peaceful interactions between democracies and non-democracies. The assessment would be done against the context of East Asia region as different regime types are present. By using comparative case studies as an analytical framework, the paper will examine 3 case studies. Firstly, a dispute between two democratic states; followed by a dispute between a democratic state and a non-democratic state; and lastly, a dispute between two non-democratic states.
