Universities are one of those places where network infrastructure is implemented. Lessons are very much reliant on the internet nowadays, where lecture notes, tutorials and lab manuals are all shared online. Nanyang Technological University primarily uses the platform Blackboard for teaching staffs to share course content to students. With almost few thousand people accessing the school network at the same time, it is not uncommon for students to face issue like slow network speed during peak hours of school. Worst cases are when students are unable to access Blackboard to download their course files, resulting in a disruption of lessons. Classroom in a Box (CRiB) offers an offline solution for teaching staff in reducing the school network load. An entire suite of materials for lectures, tutorials and labs will be housed on a single Raspberry PI. Leveraging on the RPI’s tiny size, teaching staff could bring around the CRiB anywhere. It will be a portable and convenient solution. Students can connect their devices to access the CRiB. CRiB will be user friendly to a variety of devices like smartphone, tablet and laptop. Features of the CRiB will include sharing of course material, assignment submission, chat system and fully feature browser- based Integrated development environment (IDE). These features will be helpful to the teaching staff in lessons. With the browser-based IDE, programming-based labs will not be restricted to only lab environment. These lab sessions can be held school tutorial rooms too. Overall, CRiB is a versatile system which can be used in a wide variety of lesson types. At the same time, it can help reduced the network load on the school network. Since the birth of internet, network infrastructure is a common sight in places where there
is a lot of people. Universities are one of those places where network infrastructure is
implemented. Lessons are very much reliant on the internet nowadays, where lecture
notes, tutorials and lab manuals are all shared online. Nanyang Technological University
primarily uses the platform Blackboard for teaching staffs to share course content to
students.
With almost few thousand people accessing the school network at the same time, it is not
uncommon for students to face issue like slow network speed during peak hours of school.
Worst cases are when students are unable to access Blackboard to download their course
files, resulting in a disruption of lessons.
Classroom in a Box (CRiB) offers an offline solution for teaching staff in reducing the
school network load. An entire suite of materials for lectures, tutorials and labs will be
housed on a single Raspberry PI. Leveraging on the RPI’s tiny size, teaching staff could
bring around the CRiB anywhere. It will be a portable and convenient solution.
Students can connect their devices to access the CRiB. CRiB will be user friendly to a
variety of devices like smartphone, tablet and laptop. Features of the CRiB will include
sharing of course material, assignment submission, chat system and fully feature browser-
based Integrated development environment (IDE). These features will be helpful to the
teaching staff in lessons. With the browser-based IDE, programming-based labs will not
be restricted to only lab environment. These lab sessions can be held school tutorial rooms
too.
Overall, CRiB is a versatile system which can be used in a wide variety of lesson types.
At the same time, it can help reduced the network load on the school network. |
