Summary: | The prevalence of mobile devices has equipped technology with greater penetrating
power to benefit people’s life in terms of convenience and people have highly
depended on various search engines to search for answers, solutions and information.
Mathematics is a subject that can incorporate technology into the learning and
teaching materials due to its special nature in terms of the formula, special symbols,
pictures that are presented in the question body, instead of just plain texts. This
problem is not trivial since the mathematical documents are highly symbolic and
structured, increasing the complexities of information retrieval and content display.
Hence, there is an increasing need for a mathematical question search engine
specially catered to search of math questions.
This project aims to enhance students’ learning experience by providing a user-friendly
platform to search for mathematical documents. By assessing the existing
Mathematical mobile applications MathQA and Math Search, this project develops a
new application, MOE Math, which has higher usability, with the implementation of a
versatile search engine, math paper generation, question uploading functionality, and
with the incorporation of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and image preprocessing
features.
This project is divided into three phases: 1) Enhancement of the existing web system
2) Reviewing of two existing mobile applications, MathQA and Math Search 3)
Development of a usable and robust application, MOE Math. With exercising good
design principles and following Agile software lifecycle, this project ensures a flexible,
extensible, and efficient mobile application to facilitate mathematical learning
experience. |
