Description
Summary:With the increase in turnover rates of mobile phones and the negative impacts associated with it such as increase in e-waste, there is a high motivation for viable options to recycle mobile phones. Furthermore, many times ‘obsolete’ phones lacking the latest innovative technology are replaced despite still being in good working conditions and have basic capabilities. In view of this, the project aims to make use of basic capabilities of mobile phones e.g. cameras to implement a surveillance system. It aims to overcome limitations of traditional surveillance systems such as high costs and lack of flexibility. The Portable Mobile Surveillance and Detection (PMSD) application developed is an Android application which allows users to recycle their old phones to act as portable surveillance devices. Users would be able to remotely control the application simply via SMS commands to execute various services such as Photo Capture, Video Recording, Motion Detection and Live Streaming. Dropbox functionality is integrated with the application to allow users to view captured media via the internet and to prevent flooding of phone’s internal storage.
