Description
Summary:Beach volleyball is a growing sport worldwide. A coach is a powerful figure and has great influence on athletes’ performance and development. Research on the role of a coach in various sports have been done – soccer, basketball, volleyball and more. Communication and coaching styles that work with male athletes may not be effective on female athletes. The alignment of coaching to the expectations and preferences of female athletes is important for effective coaching and their holistic development. As such, it is important to understand how female athletes perceive an ideal coach. The purpose of this research is to uncover how Singapore national beach volleyball female athletes voice out about an ideal coach. Five Singapore national beach volleyball female athletes were interviewed. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted for each participant. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data to identify common themes that participants used to describe an ideal coach. The four main themes that the female athletes voiced out about an ideal coach are – understanding the female athletes, being a role model with responsibility, possessing rich experience as a coach and athlete, and planning for well-organised training.
