Description
Summary:Laser surface remelting process has been applied on the surface of Al-50%Si-0.5%P alloy to refine the primary silicon particle and improve hardness. Effect of laser remelting process on the depth and width of laser-remelted layers was studied. The width of all laser remelted tracks increased slightly at the beginning and then tended to be stable due to the diffusion of energy from the laser beam. The depth and width of laser remelted tracks increased with decreasing the laser scanning speed and decreased with decreasing the laser power. Due to the rapid heating and cooling process, the primary silicon particle in Al-50%Si-0.5%P alloy was significantly refined by laser surface remelting and its average size decreased from 50 to 7 μm. The hardness distributed more uniformly in the remelted area than in the base material and the mean hardness in the remelted area was also higher than that in the base material, increasing by 35%. In addition, the hardness increased with decreasing the laser power and the laser scanning speed.
