Summary: | This project includes the literature review of additive manufacturing, fused deposition modelling (FDM), and other non-conventional curing techniques.
Experimental results of the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of 3D printed composite - carbon fibre reinforced onyx is studied. Hygrothermal effect study is also conducted to evaluate if heat and moisture will affect the mechanical properties of the composite. Although there are many researches done on carbon fibre, there is yet to have any research done with onyx plastic matrix.
A total of 12 specimens were printed for this project, 6 specimens for bending tests and another 6 specimens for tensile test. The strength and modulus of elasticity are calculated from the test results and have shown that the tensile strength and tensile strain decreased significantly in the heated circulation bath. Moreover, soaking the specimens also decreased the flexural strength and flexural strain by a smaller percentage.
Voids were suspected to be in the printed specimens. Errors and limitations are also reported in this study. |
